When should I winterize?

Before the first hard freeze. In Michigan, the earlier in fall you get on the schedule, the better.

Do you travel for winterizing?

Yes. We are based in Kent City and we winterize homes and cabins all over Michigan.

Do I need to winterize if I leave the heat on?

Not always. If the heat stays on and someone checks the house, many homes are fine. A furnace failure or power outage while nobody is there is the risk. If the place will sit empty for weeks, winterizing is cheap insurance.

What should I do in the meantime?

Disconnect garden hoses from outdoor faucets and know where your main water shutoff is. If a pipe ever bursts, shutting that valve is the first thing to do.

Why winterizing matters

Water left sitting in pipes can freeze when the heat is off or low. Ice takes up more room than water, so it can split pipes, fittings and fixtures. You usually don't find out until spring, when the water comes back on and the floor gets wet.

What we do

Every house is a little different, but a typical winterizing includes:

Shutting off the water at the main or the well
Draining the water heater and the water lines
Blowing out the lines with compressed air
Draining toilets and adding non-toxic plumbing antifreeze to toilets and drain traps
Draining outdoor faucets
